You wake up, reach for your phone, and the first thing you learn about your day is a number: a sleep score. Seventy-two. Not bad, but not great. By the time you've had your coffee, you've already decided today might be an off day - because the ring on your finger said so.

This is "sleepmaxxing", one of the defining wellness habits of 2026: an explosion in sleep-tracking rings, bands and smart mattresses, all promising to tell you exactly how well you slept (Business Upturn, 2026). The trouble is not the tracking itself. It is what happens when the score becomes the goal.

The tracker is not as accurate as it feels

Sleep trackers use movement and heart rate to estimate what your brain is doing, rather than measuring brain activity directly the way a sleep lab does. The Sleep Foundation is blunt about the limits of this: trackers "aren't perfectly accurate", and even sleep specialists cannot say precisely how well any given device measures sleep, because proper head-to-head validation against clinical-standard testing is still limited (Sleep Foundation, 2026). You are, in effect, trusting a good guess.

That would matter less if we treated the score as a rough guide. Increasingly, we do not.

When tracking your sleep starts to cost you sleep

In 2017, sleep researchers Kelly Baron and Sabra Abbott gave this pattern a name: orthosomnia, an obsessive pursuit of "perfect" sleep driven by tracker data (Baron & Abbott, 2017). Someone with orthosomnia might stay in bed longer just to improve their score, distrust a doctor's reassurance because their ring disagrees, or lie awake anxious about the fact that they are lying awake - which, of course, makes the score worse.

A 2024 study of 523 adults found this is not a fringe problem. Depending on how strictly it was measured, between 3.0% and 14.0% of the general population showed signs of orthosomnia, and 35.8% of the sample used a sleep tracker regularly. Crucially, those flagged with orthosomnia scored measurably higher on insomnia severity than those without it (Jahrami et al., 2024). The tool bought to solve the problem was, for a meaningful minority, tangled up with the problem itself.

This is exactly the kind of pattern Health Labs HQ takes seriously: a physical habit (checking a score) with a psychological consequence (anxiety, hypervigilance about sleep) that can end up doing more harm than the thing it was meant to fix. Sleep does not respond well to being watched too closely - the harder you chase a perfect number, the more alert and wound up you become, which is the opposite of what sleep needs.

Use the data, don’t chase the score

The answer is not to bin the tracker. Used loosely, over weeks rather than nights, it can genuinely help you spot patterns - a consistent late bedtime, a habit of scrolling before lights out, a dip in deep sleep after alcohol. The evidence problem is with checking it obsessively and treating single-night numbers as verdicts.

  1. Check trends, not nights. Look at your data weekly, not daily. One "bad" night from a device that cannot actually see inside your brain tells you almost nothing on its own.

  2. Judge by how you feel, not just the score. If you feel rested and clear-headed, trust that over a number generated by a wrist strap. The score is an estimate of you; you are not an estimate of the score.

  3. Notice if checking the app makes you anxious. If opening the sleep app first thing has started to set the tone for your day, that is a signal worth acting on - not by checking more, but by putting the phone away until later in the morning.

  4. Take a real problem to a real person. If sleep quality is genuinely and persistently poor, that is a conversation for a GP or sleep specialist, not a wearable. A device that cannot see your brain activity cannot diagnose a sleep disorder.

  5. Protect the basics regardless of what the score says. A consistent wake time, daylight in the morning, and winding down before bed do more for sleep quality than any tracker, and none of it requires a subscription.

The most useful thing a sleep tracker can do in 2026 is quietly nudge better habits in the background. The moment it becomes the first thing you check and the measure of how your day will go, it has stopped helping and started costing you the very thing it promised to protect.
